Roma, non basta una vite

Roma, non basta una vite. Rome, a lifetime is not enough. For us four nights will just have to do! But we've made really good use of our time and managed to fit heaps in in our first two days. Our first day included the Palantine Hill, Roman Forum and, of course, the Colosseum. Thanks to some handy advice from a Kiwi worker from our hostel we managed to avoid a 2 hour queue by simply buying our ticket at another site!

After the Colosseum we headed further into the central city area and checked out some of the famous Piazza's (including Piazza Navona, full of street artists at work). We also went by the Vittorio Emmanuel II monument which is also home to the Unknown Soldier, a precious Italian site watched night and day by armed guards.

Yesterday we took the metro out to the Vatican City and, thanks again to that same Kiwi, managed to avoid absolutely horrendous queues for the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum. Seriously, we're talking a kilometre or so long, our guess at least a two hour wait. Instead we visited St Peters Basilica first and went up to the top of the 120m high dome (551 steps later!) for awesome views of the city. No matter what your religion you can't help but be blown away by the grandeur of inside the church. Extravagant mosaics lined the walls and ceilings as well as impressive sculptures dotted throughout.

A few hours later, we breezed straight into the Vatican Museum and even passed as students (again!) and got in half price!

Earlier in the day we'd met a couple from our hostel, an Argentinian girl and, surprise surprise, another Aussie! We spent the rest of the afternoon with them and walked home via the river before sharing some Italian red wine (a Chianti, and a Merlot Montepulciano Sangiovese) and enjoyed some of the free pasta our hostel provides each weeknight.

We're set to leave Rome tomorrow morning and arrive in Munich Thursday evening. We plan to spend four or five nights there, before heading to our final destination in Berlin. It's a tad depressing that today will our last day of warm weather. The forecast for Munich is less than desirable compared to what we've had.

Ciao for now.

Sheryl & Dale
p.s No facility to upload photos, again, so we'll try in Munich.

When in Rome...

do as everyone does (and should do) -see the Vatican.

...or spend an entire week(on your first ever trip overseas- in my defence) go to the zoo, take a metro to the end of the line then a bus without knowing where it goes and buy gelato in the middle of nowhere, but don't go to the Vatican.
You live and learn....
